Jumper Cables vs. Portable Chargers
There's really only one reason to use jumper cables: to recharge a battery. Any other use will not be safe. There are two configurations for using jumper cables to recharge a vehicle battery: traditional jumper cables and portable chargers.
- Jumper Cables
Your car's battery provides the necessary voltage for the starter motor to fire, which requires a large burst of electrical power. Without enough energy stored in the battery, the vehicle will not start. There are many reasons why a battery could run out of power: maybe you left your headlights or interior lights on overnight, or maybe the battery is just old.
Jumper cables do not generate power by themselves. They must be connected to a charged vehicle battery. Using a jumper cable set, you can draw power from a fully charged battery in another vehicle and use it to recharge your car's dead battery. This may allow you to drive to the mechanic and have your battery changed.
- Portable Charger
Portable battery chargers have jumper cables permanently attached to them. You don't need another vehicle to recharge your car battery with a portable charger. The battery is charged in a portable charger by plugging it into a standard electrical outlet. You can then use it to jump start a vehicle's battery by hooking up the jumper cables to the dead battery.
Jumper Cable Features
All jumper cables have the same basic design. Some have thicker cables and some are longer than others, but the basic setup is the same from unit to unit. You'll find these features on all jumper cable models.
- Crocodile Clips
At each end of the wire are clips that look a bit like the jaws of an alligator and a large metal clip with teeth. The clips are usually made of copper or steel, which are good conductors of electricity. Clip handles should have a rubber coating or coating, which makes them safe to hold. Some cheaper jumper cables have plastic handles, not rubber coatings.

Because the wire carries electrical energy, it heats up considerably. The insulation over the wire helps protect you in case you touch the wire. The insulation that covers high resistance cable has different levels of thickness and stiffness. A looser insulation works well for jumper cables, because you may have to bend the cables in odd directions to fit inside the vehicle's engine compartment.
- Color Coding
Most jumper cables have a black wire and clip and a red wire and clip (or black with a red stripe). This color coding is to help you remember to connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery and the black cable to the negative terminal. Crossing the cables could ruin the batteries in both vehicles or destroy the jumper cables.
